Being an entrepreneur is a great thing, but it’s also hard work.  Starting a small business is also difficult to do, but there are many different resources available that you can take advantage of to help you get started.

One of the best such resources in the United States is the SBA or the Small Business Association.   This organization specializes in providing entrepreneurs and small business owners with the resources needed for starting a small business along with some other great advice on the subject.  The SBA is also a great source for finding small business loans to give you that extra cash to get the necessary capital needed to get started.

If you go to the SBA’s website, you can see articles and links to click on, that give you the tools to start and manage your small business.   Some of the most useful tools that the SBA has to offer are templates for business plans.   Having the right business plan is key to starting a small business.  A business plan is the roadmap of your business.   Furthermore, there are different business plans for different types of businesses.   What kind of funding are you looking for to start your business?  Are you looking for venture capital, business loans, or angel capital?   This is something you need to know, because each type of funding source requires a different kind of business plan.   Typically small businesses can do just fine with a small business loan from the local bank or credit union.  The SBA also has small business loans available for qualifying businesses.

Getting Capital For Starting a Small Business

Angel capital is capital that is invested by an angel investor that is a private individual who invests his own money into a business and expects a large return on his investment or ROI.   Some small businesses get started by having a few hundred thousand dollars invested into it by an angel investor.   Angel investors rarely require a seat on a business’s board of directors, however, some angels do want a rather large piece of the pie in return for their investment.   In most cases, however, angels typically like to have a share in a business’s equity when they invest.  This means that if you decide to sell your business at a later time, the angel investor will want to have his share in the profits also.

Venture capital is basically a form of private equity that is earmarked for startup companies, which want to go corporate.   Typically, venture capital is invested by venture capitalists who invest on a professional level for a venture capital firm.   These investors have deep pockets and usually do not invest less than $1 million in a company.

In most cases, however, starting a small business does not require venture capital, unless the business has a product that is being sold at high proportions and needs to expand to several different locations.   One good example of a small business that has gone corporate is Harley Davidson.   Both Mr. Harley and Mr. Davidson were best friends since childhood and have constantly tinkered with motors and bicycles to develop a two-wheeled motorbike.   Once they have developed a prototype of what we consider today the motorcycle, history was made.   This meant that they had to expand.   They thus first sought and obtained angel capital from a relative and the company grew to what it is today.

You might not get there, but your small business will most likely let you provide you with a nice source of income to support yourself and your family.   But it is important that before starting a small business of your own, you get as much information about what you are doing and what you can expect, as possible.
